Fall Out Boy, what happened to them?
They've just released their new single, Headfirst Slide into Coopertown On a Bad Bet. Now that has to be the worst name anyone could come up, and with Panic! and Black Kids joining the ever-growing bandwagon of long named-songs, Fall Out Boy has all all forms of originality. All forms. Where did they come from, and where do they go.
They started out as an indie band, their first record released was Take This to Your Grave. They gave an impression of just another independent emo mainstream-sounding band, but there was just that poetic, rhythmic and orchestrating difference that separated this quartet from the rest. So they were promising. And they did duly deliver, they really did: Their more well-known sophomore album, From Under the Cork Tree, had the wit of Oscar Wilde and yet still pulled it off in the most classy way an emo band would do it. Great. They may be ordinary, but you could not have it much better with any other close-to-emo band out there at that time.
Now, Infinity on High. I know, those professional reviews out there have given it twice the ratings they plastered over From Under the Cork Tree (see: IGN's 3.5, then later 8.3), but, even though I would say Infinity on High is a notch above From Under the Cork Tree, it paved open the way for Fall Out Boy. It's like Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump having a conversation, while getting high over their success.
PS: Hey, man. Do you, do you like, see how freaking high we're getting?
PW: You mean, like, on the charts, man? (Girls around PW giggle and touch him even more)
PS: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right. You see how we changed our style to a more..
PW: More pop punk, man?
PS: Yeah, yeah yeah yeah. I see the light. We should, you know, like follow it, man.
PW: Hahaha, hey girls, stop messing with me, my hair, my jacket, my
-Yeah, you get it. They followed pop. And following pop is never a good thing, unless you're aiming to be different, but then again, pop is short for popular. And popular never gets interesting.
And so, let's go right to the point. Headfirst Slide into Coopertown on a Bad Bet just deems Fall Out Boy as one of those Boys Like Girls bands.
