what school: part 1

It's the end of the exam period and surely things must be a bit loosened up. Doesn't matter, it's just recess, and recess is a relaxation period where activities are temporarily suspended for some breathing space. I take this breathing space, this relaxation period, for some sports. I don't do much sports at all, honestly. The only physical activity I heavily participate in is football (association football), and that's the only way for me to keep fit, and in this case, get fitter.

So on some days, we get to play football. On some days, we don't. Not that one of us forgot to bring a ball or we plan on studying, but because of them.

Who are "them"? Prefects, and a couple of teachers. They give a good excuse. "The discipline master says you can't play", or "the school does not allow you to play (now give me the ball)". Why? I have tried asking several times. I believed that the first person I should ask is the prefects. When one prefect tried referring me to the discipline master (DM), I questioned his authority, and whether he was using the DM as a back-up plan of sorts, something to fall back on. He did ask. Several days later, the answer given was: "The MOE does not allow children to play during recess."

Next, I decided to get the answer from one of the physical education teachers. I was rather surprised with his reaction. He didn't seem to know of such a rule at first, but then, almost as if he tried to come up with an answer, told me that they were trying to keep us safe. Safe from getting injured.

Time for the rebuttal, then.

I call up one of my SJI friends.

"Sup Allie."
"Sup Bryan."
"Do you get to play football and other stuff during recess?"
"Oh. Yeah. But the upper secondary always dominate the field."
"Really?"
"Maybe during the exam period then cannot. But that's it."

I call up one of my VS friends.

"Hey Nicholas."
"Oh, hi Bryan!" (Nicholas is such a swell guy)
"Do you get to like, play football, or, sports on a whole, during recess?"
"Why, of course!"

If MOE does not want us to play football, why do schools like SJI and VS get to? Are they not under the O Level scheme? Are they completely private? No. They are not. They are some of the better schools in Singapore. They have a parade square that isn't the car park, and a track that isn't the circumference of the school. Must I make the inference that MOE only controls this school?

And about being worried, we want to assure that everyone who wants to go out and get their ligaments torn and shins double compound fractured, are fully willing to take the risk. Yes. If we could sign a legal document saying that the school isn't responsible for it, then go. Do it. Make one.

Now, I want to give a direct "fuck you", a straight-standing, no-questions asked, don't-care-for-the-damages-ahead finger to the school.

Fuck you
F, u, c, k
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

That concludes part 1 of WHAT SCHOOL. Be sure to tune in tomorrow!
