Manchester United.. Have done it again. Since 1999 they have been waiting for the hugely coveted Champions League trophy.
Man Utd had the lead first at around the 27th minute after a calmly taken high-rise header by Ronaldo from a Wes Brown cross-in. But Chelsea responded before half time with a Lampard shot, which was a result from two unlucky deflections from Rio Ferdinand and Vidic. This motivated Chelsea to play well, and boy, did they outplay the Red Devils in the second half.
Chelsea seemed to be mostly denied from the goal posts, whacking it three times in the second half. They dominated, steered, but failed to execute.
This led to extra time. Manchester United got themselves back together as Chelsea began to look even more restless as the time went by. Then, at the second half, Tevez complained about what looked like was Manchester United's throw in, when instead the Blues got the throw.
Joe Cole was clearly not happy from what Tevez was talking about and he confronted him. This would lead to Vidic cutting in Tevez from the oncoming Chelsea players, and of all times, Didier Drogba gave Vidic a tight slap. Two referees saw it, immediate booking, red card. It was over for Chelsea, or so it looked. If it got to penalties, Chelsea would be missing their best penalty taker.
And so it went to penalties. Cristiano Ronaldo did a poor kick and Cech saved it with no trouble. Chelsea looked like they were going to win, before John Terry slipped while running to the ball to do the spot kick and he missed. He was inconsolable. That kick would've handed Chelsea the title.
And van Der Sar did one of his signature penalty saves when Anelka came on to take the kick.
Champions, indeed.
