Guero - Beck CD Review

7.8

This album is an example of perfection. The no frills rapping and the electronic sampling, the yodeling. Each track has a rather haunting memory of it - be it E-Pro's guitar riff, Girl's 8-bit beating, or Hell Yes' Japanese girl talking.

The album kicks off as E-Pro, a song with ultra repetitive guitars, Beastie Boys drums and an interesting rap to go with it. Fairly amazing song itself, then it goes to Qué Onda Guero, a laid back cool song you'd find playing anyway in Mexico. Partly Mexican slang, its cool.

Girl is a happiest tune on the album, with the chorus going "Hey, my sun-eyed girl". But take a much closer listen to the lyrics he belts. "And I know I'm gonna make her die", and the chorus, instead of "my sun-eyed", could very well be "cyanide". He's planning on a nefarious murder, that is.

Black Tambourine is a bluesy low overdrive anthem, and its chorus will hook you instantly. Earthquake Weather has Beck aiming to hit all the highest notes he can hit possibly, in a similar tune to Missing, the song before Black Tambourine.

Hell Yes is an extremely robotic song, and its music video actually is a bunch of robots dancing. The chorus is super catchy, with robotic "Hell Yes"es and a Japanese accented girl replying "Please enjoy."

Nearing the end, Rental Car is song with its very own "Yeah, yeah, yeah" chorus bit part and a hard hammering single tune guitar, hand claps, and on top of all of that, a sudden interluding yodelling session. A standout, this song is.

This album, like I said, is perfect. But everything can be improved. That's why its a 7.8.
